Description
About the Venue:
The Walled Garden housing five recently refurbished glasshouses, continues to evolve under the stewardship of the Hugo Burge Foundation, a charitable organisation dedicated to supporting creativity in all its forms. For the first time in many decades the garden is now open to the public on selected days throughout the year. In addition, the expanded Kitchen Garden provides fresh fruit and vegetables to local community larders and food charities. Events and workshops are hosted throughout the year in the Walled Garden and glasshouses.
About the Tutor:
Head Gardener, Toby Loveday, began his horticultural career in 1996 and has a breadth of experience working for the National Trust for Scotland and another important private garden. He came on board in 2021 and has been shaping the garden since then using colour and especially texture to create inspiring planting schemes. His main influence comes from arts and crafts gardens and this is evident in this unique space.
About the Workshop:
Tea and coffee will be available on arrival. Following an introduction about the garden and grounds, Toby will walk attendees through the glasshouses, looking at everything from watering, ventilation, shading, heating strategies, pest control and hygiene. There will be opportunities to ask questions on all aspects of glasshouse management during this session.
After a break for lunch, Marty Ammann, the new 1st Gardener will lead a session on Glasshouse plant propagation including pelargoniums and streptocarpus along with other plants on display. Attendees will also take a walk around the Walled Garden which has been lovingly restored over the past decade and is an inspiring space with traditional and contemporary garden features, interspersed with striking works of art.
