Description
About the Venue:
Hidden away in the heart of Cambridge, you will find Downing College’s 20-acre site which contains an impressive diversity of gardens, lawns, trees and flowers, from the expanse of the Quadrangle lawns, to the unusual mixed borders of the Sunken garden and the rich assortment of trees in the Fellows’ Garden. Limes, maples and a dawn redwood in the Paddock offer further variety, whilst the wild flower habitat lures bees and butterflies and the hazel spinney attracts wildlife. It is managed by a team of 9, who run garden tours, workshops, a volunteer scheme and follow the best practices for the environment and wildlife within the gardens.
About the Tutors:
Jack Sharp has been Head Gardener for 8 years at Downing College and was previously Deputy Head Gardener at Emmanual College for 4 years. He is RHS, NPTC and National Diploma qualified and has transformed the gardens at Downing College in the last few years having re-designed borders and created an impressive wildflower meadow. His philosophy to gardening has brought environmentally friendly garden practices into the daily life of the gardens. The Workshop will also be led by Charlie Ash the RHS qualified Nursery Lead at Downing College with extensive knowledge in plant production, cut flowers, and containers.
About the Workshop & Tour:
During this Propagation Workshop for amateur gardeners, attendees will receive hands-on learning about how to propagate plants from the experienced gardening team, with an exclusive guided tour from Downing’s Head Gardener Jack Sharp and ‘behind the scenes’ access to Downing’s propagation greenhouses. The Workshop will include demonstrations from our experienced gardening team members and time for hands-on practice and coaching. It will cover the use and how to blend compost, using propagators and containers for seed sowing, with a focus on annuals, vegetables and wildflowers. It will also cover seedling care, softwood cuttings and the potting-on of plants. All seeds, cutting and equipment used for propagation will be provided by Downing College and attendees may take home some of the seeds or cutting material used on the day.
