Description
Raby is one of the most impressive intact castles in the North of England, built in the 14th century by the powerful Neville family.
On arrival, members will be met by Dickon Harding who will give a guided walking tour of the Walled Gardens. Dickon Harding Garden & Landscape Manager Dickon Harding started his career in horticulture nearby at Wycliffe Hall, and spent many early years studying both in the sector and latterly gaining a degree in civil engineering. After time at other major North East properties such as Crathorne Hall and Kirklevington Country House Hotel, combined with a career leading a landscaping company, he joined Raby originally as a civil engineer to manage the ambitious remodelling project.
The Rising:
The 18th century Walled Garden has been remodelled by renowned garden designer Luciano Giubbilei with Lady Barnard. Together, they have laboured to create a stunning 5-acre vision, including the estate’s well-known yew hedges and the iconic Raby fig. In doing so, they have retained the gardens’ distinctive spirit; one in which the character of Raby and its rich history is deeply embedded.
The tour will last from 2.00-3.30pm and members are then free to explore the rest of the grounds and parkland. Refreshments can be purchased in the Vinery Cafe on site at the end of the tour.
The cost of this visit is £17 for members and £25 non-members.
