Devon – Creating Hazel Plant Supports 27/2/26

Price range: £60.00 through £80.00

Description

About the Venue:
South Wood Farm is a 17th Century thatched farmhouse surrounded by 5 acres of garden set in 90 acres of meadow and agricultural land. Designed by the renowned Arne Maynard, the gardens exemplify how contemporary design can be integrated into a traditional setting. The garden is well known for its stunning displays from its thousands of tulips and camassias in Spring, to the late summer colour of the herbaceous borders. The gardens also include yew topiary, a knot garden, wildflower meadows, orchards, roses, lean-to greenhouses and a stunning kitchen garden.

The garden is curated by Head Gardener, Lewis O’Brien, along with Assistant Gardener, Guy Woodhouse, and WRAGS Alumna Natalie Wickenden-Price, who completed her WRAGS placement training in the garden.

About the Tutor:
Lewis O’Brien has over 27 years’ horticultural experience gained from a background in plant nursery work, working at RHS Wisley, where he specialised in alpines and ornamentals, and then as the Head Gardener of a private garden before coming to South Wood Farm four and a half years ago. Lewis has also travelled extensively researching plants in their natural environments.

About the Workshop:
This Workshop will focus on building plant domes from locally sourced hazel that will be used to support the shrub roses in the front court. Lewis will explain the technique for twisting and shaping hazel rods, and we will then work in pairs to create the domes. If time allows, there may also be a demonstration of how to make domes to support plants in the kitchen garden. There will also be an opportunity to take a look around the garden.
