Description
About the Venue:
Tyninghame Estate has a lengthy history and is associated with Saint Baldred – there are ruins of a church beside Tyninghame house. The Earls of Haddington inhabited the estate between 1628 and 1986 when the house was sold and divided up into individual dwellings which benefit from a beautiful garden and parkland adjacent to the sea. The 4 acre formal Walled Garden which is set across parkland from Tyninghame House, combines extensive herbaceous and shrub borders, hedges, lawns, a herb garden, parterre and an informal arboretum encompassing part of this secret space. There is a large greenhouse where much propagating takes place for the garden along with the annual Plant Sale on the SGS Tyninghame Open Day.
About the Tutor:
Craig Huggan worked at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) for three years, spending one year at Dunedin Botanic Garden in NZ. After the RBGE he was self-employed before starting in 2023 at Tyninghame Walled Garden.
About the Practical Skills Day:
We will start the day with tea/coffee and an introduction to the garden. There will be a brief instruction on sharpening secateurs before Craig shows you how to prune the apple trees. During the day you will have the opportunity to prune apples in two areas of the garden. The long arbour walk is situated at the southern end and was originally planted around 100 years ago, but has mostly been replanted with modern varieties such as Discovery along with various crab apples.
At the northern end of the walled garden, is a small orchard of freestanding apple trees, comprising mostly heritage varieties such as Laxton’s Fortune and King of Pippins.
There will be a break for lunch around 1pm in the Conservatory, followed by some further pruning. Craig will also walk us through the mature arboretum where there is an interesting selection of trees including a pagoda tree, stone pines and sweet gums. There are several herbaceous borders in the garden along with mixed borders filled with many varieties of rose and a huge border of peonies. Of course it is winter, but you will be tempted to return in the summer on one of the SGS Open Days to see the garden in its summer glory!
