Essex – Propagation Workshop: Softwood Cuttings & Dividing Grasses 11/3/26

Price range: £60.00 through £80.00

Description

About the Venue:
Braxted Park was first recorded as a Deer Park in 1342 when it belonged to the Countess of Pembroke. Over the centuries there have been extensive alterations made to both the house and grounds. Braxted Park is a Grade II* listed park and garden on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. The current gardens were designed fifteen years ago specifically for use as a wedding venue.

About the Tutors:
Sally Chandler started as a gardener for the Royal Parks in 2004, and became a gardener at Beth Chatto’s from 2011. With a brief gap to study garden design in 2022, she became Head Gardener at Braxted in summer last year. Gill Moxham has been a gardener part-time at Braxted for twenty years and at Eldred House aka ‘Olivers’ for ten years, and loves propagation.

About the Workshop:
The Workshop will commence with a short talk by Sally introducing Braxted Park, and details of the day which will be broken into two parts. Each session will have full instructions on the’ why’ and ‘how’ for each activity:

  • Lifting and Dividing Grasses – Stipa Gigantea: a practical opportunity to dig up grass clumps, divide and pot up. Also learning when to cut grasses back and how.
  • Propagation: this will include instruction on plant material suitable for taking cuttings, and the time of year/stage of growth for the type of cutting.

We will walk through the garden and select appropriate material. There will be plenty of time to practice, and you will be able to take cuttings home with you.
