About the Venue:
This Practical Skills Day will be held in the Kitchen Garden at Hampton Court Palace, the former home of King Henry VIII.
In June 2014, the newly restored Kitchen Garden was officially opened at Hampton Court Palace. Originally built for William and Mary in 1689, kings and queens at the palace were served fruit and vegetables from the garden for over 160 years. Now it is managed by Hilary Theaker and her team.
About the Tutor:
Hilary Theaker is the Head Gardener for the Kitchen Garden and Vine Keeper at Hampton Court Palace. She maintains the historic walled garden there, using both old and modern gardening techniques to grow a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs all year round.
About the Practical Skills Day:
This Practical Skills Day is aimed at beginners to kitchen gardening.
The day will start with a talk about the Kitchen Garden, it’s history, design and maintenance. Hilary uses both old and modern gardening techniques to grow a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs all year round. Attendees will be advised on soil preparation, discuss ‘no dig’ gardening, and direct sow some seeds. Attendees will also plant out some plugs, carry out some weeding and possibly harvesting asparagus or rhubarb. Hilary will be working with attendees, answering any questions and will detail her planting plans for the year ahead.
Attendees will be able to walk around garden post event and at lunch.

As well as the *above, please bring a small trowel, hand fork, and secateurs, and wear weather appropriate clothing (including waterproofs if needs be) and footwear (and gloves if needed).
