Description

About the Venue – Theobalds Farmhouse Garden:
Alison Green moved into the 1650’s Grade II listed farmhouse,  in 1999 and set about designing and developing the two-acre site. There are now several garden rooms in the ‘Arts & Crafts’ tradition with different design and colour schemes, large herbaceous borders, woodland, water gardens, gravel garden, exotics, topiary, all with year round structure and unusual planting.

About the Tutor:
Following a career in publishing and advertising, Alison Green retrained at Capel Manor in Horticulture, Garden Design and Hard Landscaping. Alison gardens sustainably with a focus on pollinators, fostering a haven for wildlife, particularly bees in her hives, and follows lunar cycles for planting. There are about 180 roses in the garden. In 2025, Alison demonstrated rose pruning on ITV’s Alan Titchmarsh’s Gardening Club.

About the Practical Skills Day:
There will be a short talk by Alison introducing the garden, including changes made over the years, and then focusing on the range and varieties of roses within her garden. There are about 180 roses. Alison will provide instruction in the correct techniques for both shrub pruning, and pruning and training of climbing roses. There will be plenty of time for you to practice the methods you’ve learnt on either or both types of roses.
