Description
About the Venue:
The Walled Garden comprises 3.5 acres and sits within the Preston Hall Estate near Pathhead. At its peak in the 1890’s, 15 gardeners provided fruit and vegetables for the family but it fell into disrepair until a local man offered to rejuvenate and transform it into what it is today.
About the Tutor:
Kate has been the Head Gardener at Preston Hall since 2021, having previously worked at the Edinburgh Zoo and the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh.
About the Practical Skills Day:
Kate will start the day with a walk around this impressive Walled Garden which is divided into distinct sections by an array of hedges. You will then start on the removal of the roses from an overgrown, enclosed area of the garden. The idea is to replant the beds with a selection of shade loving plants in a way that is visually impactful, but not too high maintenance. Kate will share information about preparing the bed for planting, along with a basic plan for the design of the bed and will have a selection of sample plants to illustrate the design.
After a break for lunch in the greenhouse, there will be a session on Plant ID using seed heads and winter twigs as the borders are not cut back till later in the season. There will of course be plenty of opportunities to ask questions about the garden with its interesting history and design, and any plans for its future.
