Newcastle upon Tyne – The Making of an Environmentally Friendly Garden

Birkheads Secret Garden is a 3 acre rural garden created by the current owners Christine and Mike Liddle. Begun in 1987 it is an environmentally-friendly garden created using recycled materials, planted to support wildlife  and gardened using eco principles which hasn’t been ‘watered’ for more than 25 years!!!! It is planted on a site that had been surface mined and reflects the owners desire to support the need to ‘save the planet for future generations’. It is situated in rural Gateshead between Beamish Open Air Museum & Tanfield Steam Railway, and comprises of a series of inspirational gardens displaying a wide variety of hardy plants to provide colour, scent etc. to suit the diverse conditions.

Our exclusive visit will start with an Introductory Talk followed by a tour of the gardens.  A light lunch is included.  The day then resummes with an accompanied tour of the propagation and plant production area for a behind the scenes visit, followed by time to peruse the sales area or revisit the garden.

We offer this garden visit for £17 per WFGA member and £20 for non-members.
