Set in fine parkland, alongside the River Leader, this beautiful garden has been cultivated for over 200 years and comprises an oval walled garden filled with an important collection of roses including a National Collection of pre-1900 Gallica roses. Herbaceous borders, delphinium beds, a Secret, Herb and Winter Garden along with lawns, an orchard, shrub borders and river walks with a fine collection of specimen trees, make this ‘one of Scotland’s finest private gardens’ Kenneth Cox.
Your tutor is the Head Gardener Phil Lusby. Philip was Course Director and Senior Lecturer in Horticulture and Botany at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. He has a particular interest in garden history and plant heritage and has taught courses on roses, using the National Plant Collection at Carolside.
Philip will take you through the method for pruning gallica roses, with assistance from the garden owner, Rose Foyle, whose passion and clear vision to create a beautifully serene place is evident throughout Carolside. Apart from learning gallica rose pruning skills, there is an extensive and inspirational garden to explore and discuss, with many different sections and plantings. The garden is at its glorious best during the summer.
