Description
About the Venue:
Hill House started life in the 1870’s as the woodsmen’s cottages serving the once extensive Braydon Forest, which is said to include some of the 7 oldest stands of oaks in England. Most of the ongoing project of developing the gardens in the 12-acre property started around 20 years ago. The garden includes a large greenhouse, orchard, topiary hedging, herbaceous borders and lawns and raised-bed vegetable gardens, as well as a number of plants hinting at the owner’s New Zealand roots: various varieties of kiwifruit as well as feijoas, tamarillos and Reinga Reinga (Matapouri Bay) lilies raised here from seed.
About the Tutor:
Joanne Best is head gardener at a private garden in Coln St Dennis, which was designed by Tom Stuart-Smith. She is in her 6th year at this garden, and prior to that worked at Rodmarton Manor, and has many years under her belt as a self-employed gardener too.
About the Workshop:
Jo will take us to the part of the garden where the Hazel is growing, and we will learn about which pieces are suitable for making structures and why. We will coppice the hazel and then start to build garden structures that will include weaving willow into them to create strong and beautiful structures. You will learn to make structures for pots and in the ground, suitable for plants such as peonies which require support. Regional Manager Jacqui Fry will be supporting Jo on the day. You will make a garden structure that you can then take home with you.
