Women Rule the Plot

£10.00

The Story of the 100 Year Fight to Establish Women’s Place in Farm and Garden.

Description

The Story of the 100 Year Fight to Establish Women’s Place in Farm and Garden.

Written by Peter King in 1999 to help celebrate the 100th birthday of the Women’s farm and Garden Association. These pioneering women and the story of their contribution to the place of women in the rural economy had not been recorded before.

The story is told of the setting up of the Women’s Farm and Gardening Union – instrumental in founding in World War One what became the Women’s Land Army. The history of the Association is peppered with well known names such as Lady Warwick, Gertrude Jekyll, Brenda Colvin and Madeline Agar but also it is the story of the ordinary women who swelled the ranks. In their modest way these women changed the history of the twentieth century alongside the suffragette, the Women’s Institutes and others.
