Description

After decades of neglect, Shermanbury Place was in a serious state of dilapidation and has recently been taken in hand by Antonia Boulsien. The house and gardens are now in the early stages of restoration to their former glory as a private home and as an events, education and arts venue. The 10 acre garden includes a walled Victorian kitchen garden, fruit orchards, a Victorian water garden, a herbaceous border, an alpine rockery, a rookery and topiary, much of which is being re-discovered and brought back to life.

This Practical Skills Day will focus on planting a large mixed border. The day will begin with a presentation, looking at photos of the border in it’s heyday and it’s decline (see featured photograph). There will be a discussion about the new planting including design, choice of plants and maintainance. You’ll plant your own section of the border and mulch with woodchip. At the end of the day there will be an optional tour of the gardens and grounds.

Please note the ground will be prepared for planting prior to the day.

Yasmin Mathieson, the Head Gardener, is RHS trained and has several years of experience working as a gardener for private homes and the Knepp Castle Estate. She works closely with the garden owner, Antonia Boulsien, in the planning and re-design of this wonderful restoration project.

Tea, coffee, biscuits and fruit will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch.

Please Bring & Notes:
Please bring clean and sharp secateurs, trowel and spade (if possible), and suitable footwear and gloves. Please note for garden hygiene we ask visitors to sanitise any tools and boots brought with them upon arrival (sanitisation provided). Please wear warm layers of clothing / wet weather gear if necessary.
