County Durham – National Plant Collection Private Visit

£10.00£15.00

Description

Polemonium Plantery is divided into a series of fabulous garden areas: a winter garden, a south-facing gravel garden, a pergola garden, herb and alpine yard and a cottage garden. With national plant collections of polemonium (commonly known as ‘Jacob’s Ladder’), alpine strawberries, hakonechloa (Japanese forest grass) and a small plant nursery, there’s plenty to see for the garden enthusiast. Polemonium Plantery is divided into a series of fabulous garden areas: a winter garden, a south-facing gravel garden, a pergola garden, herb and alpine yard and a cottage garden.

Collection owner Diane Nicholl-Brown grew her first Polemonium in her home garden at Ebchester many years ago, but found it was wrongly named and there was little reliable public information on them. After acquiring as many plants as were available, she was awarded National Plant Collection status in 1992. She then continued her research at Newcastle University in 1994-1997 reading Plant Biology for a First class honours degree. Then on to Durham University for PGCE and teaching Plant Biology and RHS Certificate in Horticulture courses at Houghall College. She exhibited for many years at Hampton Court Flower Show and Gardener’s World Live and Tatton Park, and attended other plant fairs and gave talks to Gardening groups.
She was awarded Scientific Status in 1999, and has been a member of Plant Heritage for over 40 years.

On arrival, Diane will give an introduction to the garden and her extensive national plant collections. Attendees will then have the opportunity to take time to view the collections in situ in her fabulous garden, which she and her husband planted from scratch in 1998. You can also call on Diane’s extensive RHS teaching expertise to ask any questions about propagation and growing a national plant collection. The visit will last approx 2 hours.
