Northumberland – Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens Visit

£15.00£18.00

Description

Boasting sweeping views over gentle rolling countryside, Belsay is set within the evocative landscape of Northumberland’s ‘border country’. It comprises three distinct but related elements: a medieval castle that was enlarged in the early 17th century, a Greek Revival mansion that superseded it as a family residence at the beginning of the 19th century, and an outstanding garden linking the two buildings. Much of this garden was created within the quarries that supplied the stone for the new house.

Our guide for this visit will be Steven Richardson-Scurr. Starting at a forest nursery at Castle Howard, Steven has always had a passion for horticulture. From a farming background, he worked with private estates before joining Belsay in 2006, becoming garden supervisor in 2017. He has continued to broaden his knowledge of horticulture and is able to pass on significant knowledge of the garden to staff, visitors and volunteers.

On arrival, members will be met by Steven Richardson-Scurr from the gardening team. He will give a guided walking tour of the gardens and grounds, and provide an update on the recently concluded Belsay Awakes project. The Belsay Awakes project has safeguarded the hall and castle for years to come, and brought the gardens back to their glorious best.

Belsay’s grounds and gardens have been reinvigorated. Internationally renowned garden designer Dan Pearson created a new plant scheme in the formal gardens. Around the grounds invasive species have been removed, adding trails and information and enhancing habitats for wildlife and native plants. Major conservation works have also taken place, in particular a brand-new roof for the hall ensuring that it will be around for generations to come.

The tour will last until 11.30am, and members are then free to explore the hall and grounds.
The café on site will be open and refreshments including tea/coffee, cakes and lunch will be available to buy.

The cost of this visit is £15 for members and £18 non-members.
