East Sussex – Bates Green Garden Visit

£20.00£22.00

Description

The Garden that surrounds and embraces the house was originally designed and planted by the acclaimed plantswoman Carolyn McCutchan. The Garden is planted in a naturalistic style with paths meandering amongst beds that are full of trees, flowers and shrubs. Bees, birds and insects abound, gardeners pick, prune and plant and yet there is always a sense of tranquility here. The Wildflower Meadow will be full of colour, birdsong and movement, there is a mown path and plenty of seating on which to admire the fine views of the South Downs. Beatons Wood is a 24 acre ancient oak and hornbeam wood which has been sensitively managed by the McCutchan family for over 100 years.

The event will be hosted by John McCutchan, the Garden Owner, and Emma Reece, the Head Gardener, with help from their wonderful gardening team and WRAGS Trainee. John has lived at Bates Green for much of his life and looks after the Garden, Wildflower Meadow and the ancient woodland that joins the Garden. Emma was a WRAGS trainee herself in this garden in 2002 and, having worked in the heritage sector of horticulture and taught at both Plumpton and Brinsbury Colleges, returned in 2020 to restore and revive the Garden.

We will meet in the Barn for tea/coffee and homemade cake and Emma Reece will give us a short introductory talk. We’ll then go for a walk and talk through the Garden led by WRAGS Trainee, Emma Tee, who will tell us about her involvement in the Garden to date.

Anu will be in the Barn on that day selling delicious lunches. Attendees have the option of staying for lunch and exploring the garden further or the woodland next door.

The cost for this garden visit, is £20 per WFGA member, £22 non WFGA member.
